A man killed several people in Kongsberg, a town in Norway, on Wednesday by attacking them with a bow and arrows. The unidentified accused was taken into custody after the brutal attack.

“We can, unfortunately, confirm that there are several injured and also, unfortunately, several killed in this episode. The man who committed this act has been arrested by the police and, according to our information, there is only one person involved”, Øyvind Aas, the police chief, told reporters.

“The man has been apprehended … from the information we now have, this person carried out these actions alone. Several people have been injured and several are dead,” he added.

According to local reports, the accused moved throughout the town and authorities had cordoned off several large areas. He reportedly started attacking people at a Coop Extra supermarket on Kongsberg’s west side following which the residents were ordered to stay indoors.

Speaking at a press conference in Oslo, Erna Solberg, the country’s outgoing prime minister, described the incident as “gruesome” and said that “all necessary resources” are being deployed.

“The perpetrator has carried out horrific acts against several people. It is a very dramatic situation that has hit Kongsberg society hard, and the events shake us all,” she said.

In a Facebook post, Labour leader Jonas Gahr Støre described the attack as a “cruel and brutal act.”

“My thoughts and deepest sympathy now go to those affected, their families, and to the police, health personnel and aid workers who are now working full time to provide an overview and assist those who need help,” Støre said.
