At least 2 civilians are dead after a shooting incident was reported at a Safeway shopping Center in Bend Oregon, a Bent Police Department spokesperson said on Sunday.

A third victim sustained injuries but was reported to be in good condition the spokesperson of St Charles Health System, Lisa Goodman told the Oregonian. 

The shooter was found dead with an AR-15 style rifle and a shotgun close to his body, according to BPD Police Chief Mike Krantz at a press conference held at 10:30 pm. He told reporters that responding officers heard gunshots while entering the Safeway but later found a person they believed to be the shooter dead. Krantz added that the shooter was a man but did not identify him.

The incident began around 7 pm when the shooter opened fire and killed a person at the entry to shopping center, BPD spokesperson Sheila Miller told The Oregonian. The shooter then killed another person at the rear of the grocery store.

Safeway employees were seen ushering shoppers into the stock room and out the back door an eyewitness told The Oregonian. Allegedly, the shooter entered the grocery store through the westernmost front door and was seen “spraying shots” into every aisle, according to an eyewitness that The Oregonian spoke to.

Shortly after the shooting, the hospital asked residents of Bend to avoid going to the medical center unless for a severe emergency as they were dealing with an “active trauma response”, according to their Facebook page.

Deputies arrived at the scene shortly after 7 pm on Sunday after receiving reports of multiple gunshots heard in the area of the shopping center, at Highway 20 and Northeast 27th Street.

Bend police said in a tweet that there was “an active investigation in the area of The Forum Shopping Center. Please avoid the area. More updates to come as the investigation continues.”
