Residents of Cobb County, Georgia, were handed a shock on Thursday evening, September 8, 2022, when two Sheriff’s deputies were killed in the line of duty while they were serving a warrant. Sheriff Craig Owens said that the incident took place in the Marietta neighbourhood at some time around 9 pm local time.

According to the Sheriff, the killed deputies were serving a warrant at a home in Marietta, where they did not get a response. When the deputies were coming back to their vehicle, two people arrived in a car and shot them.

The SWAT and FAST teams responded to the incident soon, which happened near the intersection of Habersham Road and John Ward Road SW. The suspects barricaded themselves inside a house after allegedly shooting one of the deputies in the head and another in the pelvis.

Both deputies were transported to the Kennestone Hospital but one of them, who was shot in the pelvis, died on the way.

The identities of the dead deputies have not been made public till now. “We want to make complete notifications to their entire family,” Sheriff Owens said.

“Our hearts are definitely broken. It’s not going to be an easy road. It is a very difficult time for us. And when one agency loses someone, we all lose someone. These two deputies served Cobb County with dignity and honor,” he added.

The Sheriff also revealed that since he took charge 18 months ago, this is the first time deputies have lost their lives in the line of duty. The dead deputies are survived by their wives.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp spoke with the Cobb County Sheriff’s office soon after the incident, asking what he could do to help. “We’ve also received help calls from all over the state of Georgia asking what others can do to help during this time,” Sheriff Owens revealed.

The two arrested individuals have since been transported to Cobb County jail.
