Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, saw heavy police presence on Sunday, as reports of a mass shooting began to do the rounds and many at the amusement park tweeted about being evacuated.

This has led to some remembering the Highland Park shooting, and while the state has strong gun laws, there might be questions about what Six Flags Great America’s stance is when it comes to carrying weapons.

For starters, there are reports that the shooting didn’t actually start at the amusement park, but rather began in a Burger King nearby before spilling over. One Twitter user also noted that it is a rough neighbourhood which sees some amount of violence.

As for Six Flags Great America, the park is strict about its policies and notes that guests are expected to behave properly since it is a “family park”. Their official website also notes “Violating our park policies may be cause for ejection from the park without refund.”

There is a list of prohibited items, barring people from carrying them onto the park premises at any time of the day. This includes laser pointers, knives, guns and ammunition, fireworks or explosives, chemical weapons and mace or pepper spray, among other things.

Six Flags Great America also requests visitors comply with the policies noting that apart from the code of conduct for guests, they have to adhere to “local, state and federal laws”. There might also be individual park policies, rules, and instructions that are posted or listed otherwise.

The amusement park even goes a step further in ensuring safety by prohibiting the use of drones over or from the park premises without prior written consent. No unmanned aerial vehicle can be flown irrespective of its weight, size, and purpose.

News of the shooting has brought out various reactions on Twitter, with one user commenting, “So today I was planning on going to six flags with my brothers but we didn’t go because we went to a party instead and now there is a shooting at the six flags i planning on going I’m so happy I am alive and I pray for the victims”.
