A South Carolina police officer has been fired and arrested after he was caught on bodycam stomping the head of a man in an attack that took place on July 26.

According to a warrant, the officer, identified as David Lance Dukes, responded to the scene in Orangeburg after receiving reports of a man roaming around with a gun. That is when the officer made contact with the victim and ordered him to the ground on gunpoint.

While the victim was on the ground, the officer stomped on his head with his boot, resulting in the man’s head striking the concrete. The victim suffered a bruise to his forehead and was rushed to the hospital by paramedics.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reviewed the footage of the incident and said the use of force was “outside the scope” of their policy.

“The actions of this officer does not represent the organization and values of  Orangeburg Department of Public Safety or the men and women who serve it,” Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler said last week.

The 38-year-old officer has since been fired and taken into custody in connection with the incident. He has been charged with first degree assault and battery.

Dukes’ lawyer told NBC News that he fully cooperated with state police.

“This is a difficult situation and an unfortunate situation. He has absolutely no violent history and he’s not a proclivity to violence,” Jack Furse said.

Meanwhile, Attorney Justin Bamberg, who is representing the victim in the case, said his client “is disabled, had done absolutely noting wrong, was complying, unarmed, defenseless, and did not deserve to be stomped on as though he was a fire that needed to be put out. He had nothing to do with the police even being called out in the first place.”
