Four people sustained injuries after the front of a supermarket collapsed in Las Vegas on Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a La Bonita supermarket around 7 a.m.  and transported the injured to a local hospital after “the front awning, or mansard, collapsed,” Assistant Fire Chief Scott Carnahan told local media, adding that the firefighters were working to ensure “the rest of the building is structurally sound.”

All utilities to the supermarket were turned off following the collapse. All the injured sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“They’re very fortunate. Later in the day, it might have been a different story,” said Clark County Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Broadwell.

Photos and videos doing the rounds on social media showed  debris in front of the building.

Meanwhile, around 20 to 25 people were reported to be in the building at the time of the incident.

Recalling the incident, Deli supervisor Adolfo Navarret, who was one of the people in the building, said, “I just see the windows breaking like it is an earthquake. And I look behind me and I see a bunch of debris and dust.”

Soon, over a dozen employees rushed out of the back of the building to safety.

In a press conference, Broadwell said the awning collapsed due to undetermined structural deficiency.

Armando Martinez, General Manager of La Bonita Supermarket #4, released a statement regarding the incident.

“Our Desert In location will remain closed until further notice and/or cleared by the proper authorities. All employees will be given the day off fully paid and offered any medical or emotional support services if needed. Once they are ready, they will be relocated to another location until we can reopen the Desert inn store.”

He added that he is thankful that the incident happened so early and not during busier times.

“At this moment, we can only thank God that this happened so early in the morning and not during busier hours. As we get more information, we will update everyone via social media and our website. We would like to thank all the first responders who arrived quickly and helped the injured,” the statement read.
