A tanker crash and explosion led to both directions of the I-795 expressway in Pikesville, Baltimore, to shut on Friday morning, per the Maryland Department of Transportation. The Department said that based on its CHART Map, the crash happened at 6 am on the I-795 northeast expressway at the I-695 outer loop.

The driver, who was injured in the accident, was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, Maryland State Police said.  The details of the injuries are unclear.

CBS News reports that the tanker was carrying diesel fuel when it overturned on the expressway causing a major explosion. Heavy flames and thick smoke was seen in the videos of the crash shared on social media.

The report also says that the crash suspended traffic movement on the I-795 from both directions, but southbound lanes opened before 8 am.

The Baltimore County Fire Department is at work at the scene alongside the Maryland Department of Environment to bring the diesel spill under control.

The MTA suspended the MEtro SubwayLink service between Owings Mill and Old Court stations and also a bus bridge from Owings Mills to Milford Mills, per the same report.

This is a developing story.
