Twitter users rallied around the eldest daughter of Texas Senator Ted Cruz on Tuesday after reports of her attempted suicide went viral on social media. 

It was reported that Caroline Cruz, 14, was hospitalized with self-inflicted knife wounds, but she was doing okay. “This is a family matter, and thankfully their daughter is OK. There were no serious injuries,” reps for the Republican politician told the media. “The family requests that the media respect their daughter’s privacy at this time.”

The senator is currently in Washington DC and it was not immediately known if he will travel home following the incident. 

Caroline came out as bisexual at the age of 13 and openly declared that she opposed her father’s conservative political views. “A lot of people judge me based upon him at first glance,” she said in a TikTok. “But I really disagree with most of his views.”

People on Twitter begged trolls to stand down as a minor’s life was involved in the incident and to be respectful while commenting on the platform.

“I personally can’t stand the man but no family should have to go through this. No child should feel like their life is not worth living. Sending much love to her & praying she finds the support she needs regardless of parents’ beliefs,” one of them said, while another wrote, “To clarify, it appears as though Ted Cruz’s 14 year old daughter Caroline has attempted suicide. Nobody likes Ted Cruz but let’s keep it respectful for the child, please.”

A Twitter user noted, “To Ted Cruz’s daughter. There’s a whole country of love and support for you and your feelings. Everything you feel is valid. These are hard years, and sometimes our families don’t support us in the ways that we need, but there is a tribe for you out there no matter how you feel.” One more wrote, “OMG, terrible news: Ted Cruz’s young daughter has attempted suicide. My sincere thoughts and prayers to the family.”

Another commented, “I don’t care how much we all despise Ted Cruz. His 14-year-old daughter and her private pain are off limits. She deserves only love, compassion and warmth. All of us have suffered under the shadow of sadness. Let’s give her and the Cruz family respect & support during this time.”
