An 18-year-old was arrested after she was caught on camera tossing her newborn baby into a dumpster in New Mexico. The infant was found alive hours later by dumpster divers.

CCTV footage showed Alexis Avila arriving at the dumpster on North Thorp Street around 2 pm on Friday. She was then seen pulling a black trash bag out of her car and tossing it into the dumpster.

Hours later, three people who were sifting through the trash removed the black bag and found the baby inside. One of them quickly called cops and said that he, his girlfriend and their friend heard a cry and found the baby boy, with the umbilical cord still attached, in one of the bags.

“Upon arrival officers rendered aid to the newborn child and the baby was transported to a local hospital by Hobbs EMS. The child was subsequently transported to a Lubbock Hospital for further pediatric treatment,” police said in a statement. The newborn was listed in stable condition.

After checking the CCTV footage, cops arrived at the accused’s home. Her parents told them that she was sleeping and that she had been sick with stomach pains.

Cops spoke to the 18-year-old who told them that she visited a doctor on January 6 after she experienced stomach pains. The doctor broke the news of her pregnancy to her. The girl then unexpectedly gave birth to the boy in the bathroom of her residence. Panicked, the teen quickly cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the newborn in a towel and threw him in a dumpster.
