Racking up around $57 million from 4,417 locations on the first day of hitting theatres, ‘The Batman’ seems to be satiating viewers after its anticipated release.

Although the box office figure includes $21.6 million from Thursday’s preview screenings, the Warner Bros. release is presumed to touch a mark somewhere between $120 million and $130 million during the weekend.

The Robert Pattinson starrer has transcended Sony’s ‘Uncharted’, making it the biggest opening weekend release this year. Other studios have steered clear of Warner Bros., resulting in no other major box office releases this weekend.

While the film surpasses certain records, ‘The Batman’ falls short compared to the franchise’s big releases such as Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ and Zack Snyder’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. The films amassed an opening weekend figure of $158 million and $166 million respectively.

Regardless, the DC adaptation has managed to garner critical acclaim, with Peter Debruge, a critic at Variety stating that the “grounded, frequently brutal and nearly three-hour film noir registers among the best of the genre, even if — or more aptly, because — what makes the film so great is its willingness to dismantle and interrogate the very concept of superheroes.”

Directed by Matt Reeves, ‘The Batman’ features actor Robert Pattinson as the seventh actor to sport the dark cape in the live-action flick. The film also stars Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Colin Farrell as the Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon. Set for an earlier release, the film was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, making its production budget exceed $200 million.

Although the film seems like an ideal weekend binge for moviegoers, it still has a long way ahead before it trailblazes a separate franchise in Warner Bros’ cinematic universe.
