Princess Diana is certainly one of the prime characters of The Crown. Also addressed as %u201CThe People’s Princess%u201D, her first meeting with Prince Charles may have been heavily fictionalized in The Crown, but her experiences as the newest member of the British Royal Family are more or less accurate.

Initially, she undergoes a surprisingly warm welcome %u2013 especially after her interaction with the household at Balmoral %u2013 but this soon begins to change, much to her disappointment. Sadly for Diana, life doesn’t get easier for her after she has her two children, William and Harry, since her husband continues to be vehemently in love with his original paramour, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

When Charles lied to her the first time

Unaware of the fact Prince Charles has a soft corner from another woman %u2013 Camila Parker-Bowles %u2013 Diana trusted her husband. However, she discovered an undeniable evidence against Charles when she found a bracelet that Charles had made for Camilla and himself. The striking jewelry had F and G for Fred and Gladys, respectively, engraved on it. Charles however claimed that it was nothing more than a “farewell gift” for a friend. This was the first time when Charles lied to Diana.

When she is separated from William

In the first tour to Australia made by Prince and Princess of Wales, the entourage suggested that Diana should leave her firstborn baby in the care of a few guardians, as William would be a hindrance to their success. However, Diana takes direct offense at this statement, furiously denied her permission. Nevertheless, the transfer was made anyway. Diana tolerates this for quite some time, but she manages to put her foot down soon enough.

When the Queen rejects her hug

Princess Diana had a very formal relation with Queen Elizabeth ll as most of her pleas were nonchalantly brushed aside. The Queen struggles to maintain a dignified composure while leaving but fails miserably when the Princess hugs her without waiting for consent. The hug continues for a few seconds, but the Queen’s arms remain firmly attached to her side. Ultimately, she just walks away without a single kind word or gesture directed towards Diana.

When her birthday gift to Charles is rudely rejected

The birthday of Prince Charles was celebrated publicly, which winds up in a performance dedicated to him by Diana. Diana gets up as if to go to the powder room but secretly sneaks away backstage. Her sudden emergence, and consequent dance to the tune of “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel, was received with incredible praise, both at the event and in the news coverage the next day. Once again deprived of his moment, Charles furiously blames her for desiring public attention, even though she intended the opposite.

When Charles blames her for Camilla’s pain

Following Diana’s tour to United States %u2013 which turned out to be even more impressive than her Australian one %u2013 Camilla tearfully approaches her lover Charles and mourns that she would never be as radiant as his wife, insisting that their relationship should end. Charles was shocked to hear this, but she states that the people would never stop comparing her to Diana. He later chooses to blame Princess Diana for Camilla’s agony, knowing full well that she had nothing to do with it.
