More than twenty people were left injured, after two trains collided with one another on the Commonwealth Avenue rail line in Boston on Friday, the Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority said, according to US media reports.

According to a tweet from the Boston Fire Department, twenty-three people have been transported to hospitals for injuries that are not life-threatening after the accident Friday evening.

However, the department asked people to avoid the area. In the latest update, they said, “We have a count of 23 patients transported by multiple EMS agencies. No life threatening injuries reported at this time. Please avoid area.”

The authority said the collision involved two Green Line trains near Babcock Street.

In a further tweet, the Boston Fire Department said multiple agencies were working on the scene and patients were being transported between Boston Emergency Medical Services and Brookline emergency medical service.

“The train was stopped at the light when it suddenly jerked forward,” a passenger who was on one of the trains told CNN. “It felt like the worst amusement park ride that you could imagine, just jerking you forward.”

Meanwhile, another witness, who was sitting in a car when the crash happened, said some passengers appeared to have neck and head injuries, according to CNN inputs.”So there was a woman that was coming off the train, and she had a lot of blood coming down her face,” the witness said. “I had napkins, so I gave her some napkins.”

According to NBC, aerial footage of the scene showed at least one train with a mangled front end and a swarm of first responders nearby.

Trolley service in the area was suspended, and shuttle buses were being used instead of trains.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
