At least one person was injured after a pickup truck drove through a group of pro-choice protesters in Iowa, hours after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade.

The incident took place in Cedar Rapids, a city in Iowa. According to a preliminary investigation, the demonstrators were trying to cross the street when the traffic lights changed. The protestors and the driver of the truck then got into a verbal confrontation following which he plowed through them, injuring one of them. The driver did not stop despite the protestors hammering the window, asking him to stop.

The video of the incident showed a person screaming in pain as the truck ran over her foot. Another person appeared to have narrowly avoided being run over.

In response to the incident, Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell issued a statement saying, “Cedar Rapids is a city with a diverse population and many viewpoints. Today’s Supreme Court decision is likely to elicit strong opinions. What we must do as a city is come together, especially in times like these. The Cedar Rapids Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation into tonight’s incident. We all have a right to our opinions, but we must act in a peaceful and respectful manner.”

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the landmark case that protected abortion rights across the United States. The decision will give US states the power to alter abortion availability and enact abortion-banning legislation. This will allow abortion restrictions in about half of the US states.

The ruling received mixed reactions, with thousands of people taking to the street across the US to protest the decision and plead the Joe Biden administration to figure out a way to overrule the decision.

President Biden addressed the nation on Friday, calling it a “solemn day” and a “sad day” for the country.

He said the Supreme Court took an “unprecedented step to strip a constitutional right” from the citizens of America.

“[The Supreme Court] expressly took away a Constitutional right from the American people that ways already recognised. They didn’t limit it, they simply took it away,” he said. “That’s never been done.”
