Letitia James, the Attorney General of the state of New York on Monday announced the names of the two non-governmental independent lawyers who will be leading the investigation on the alleged sexual harassment by Andrew Cuomo, the governor for the state, who has attempted to discredit the claims amid escalating pressure for a resignation.

Anne Clark, who specialises in employment discrimination law, and Joon Kim, a former federal lawyer, will be handed over the responsibility to lead the investigation and will scrutinize the allegations made a total of five women, who have either been previously associated with Cuomo or currently work for him, since February.

James said in a statement, “This team is charged with conducting a thorough and independent investigation of, and the circumstances surrounding, allegations of sexual harassment against Governor Cuomo, including his administration’s handling of such matters”, reported AFP.

The duo was shortlisted for the responsibility of the highly sensitive issue which includes serious allegations against a serving governor of a state, who has been in service for a decade.

Moreover, the state senate of New York has also not played with a backhand and has come forward with a possible impeachment proposal against Cuomo. The minority Republican leader in the state senate, Will Barclay, announced the possibility on Monday.

He said in a statement, “After this weekend, it just became more and more apparent that, regardless of how many hearings or investigations we have, the real problem now is the governor has lost so much credibility and trust that we don’t feel like he can go forward and govern”, reported AFP.

He would then be replaced by the state’s Lieutenant Governor, Democrat Kathy Hochul, until the election in November 2022.

In case of a successful impeachment, the Lieutenant Governor of the state shall take over for the position of the governor until the next election is due.
