Captain Tom Moore, who led a fundraising initiative in Britain, during the most crucial and intense lockdown of the country, was hospitalised on Sunday due to COVID-19, his family said.

The 100-year-old walked around in his garden and broke the record for being the oldest person to be featured on the top of UK’s music charts by covering the famous song “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Moore raised funds for charity worth millions of pounds, reported AFP.

“Over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week tested positive for COVID-19,” Moore’s daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said on Twitter.

“He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing,” she explained, adding that “he is being treated in a ward although he is not in ICU”, or an intensive care unit.

“Captain Tom”, who had not been vaccinated for the virus yet, was admitted to a hospital in Bedford, central England.

Moore successfully raised over $45 million, only to donate the amount for the National Health Service’s staff who have been fighting with the pandemic selflessly.

Part was raised by circling his garden 100 times with his walker just before his 100th birthday on April 30, 2020, when he was given the honorary rank of colonel, reported AFP.

He also covered his own version of the Liverpool FC anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, which effortlessly topped the UK charts, reported AFP.

The British PM also paid his respects to the hospitalised veteran and tweeted, “You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery.”

Moore, affectionately known as “Captain Tom”, was knighted by the Queen in July 2020 and has since become an inspiration in a country hit by the worst COVID-19 death toll in Europe.
