The United States on Monday levied a fresh set of sanctions on 14 senior Chinese officials, following Beijing’s growing arm tussle with Hong Kong.

The outgoing Trump administration stated that it was freezing any US assets and barring travel to the United States of 14 vice-chairs of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress which spearheaded the new security law in HongKong.

Secretary Mike Pompeo issued a statement on the occasion stating that the latest round of sanctions, “underscore that the United States will continue to work with our allies and partners to hold Beijing accountable for undermining Hong Kong’s promised autonomy.”

Pompeo added, “The United States again urges Beijing to abide by its international commitments and to heed the voices of many countries, which have condemned its actions.”

The United States has already imposed stringent sanctions on Hong Kong’s pro-Beijing chief, Carrie Lam.

Lam in a recent interview said that she had to rely on cash following US strict impositions as she could no longer maintain a bank account.

China’s parliament had in June passed a new security law that detractors of Beijing said were violating China’s promise of allowing a separate system in Hong Kong made to Britain in 1997.

The implementation of the security law helped China in eliminating dissent and stomping out protest that longed Hong Kong last year.
