The House of Representatives is going to vote on Friday on the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act(MORE) which would decriminalize cannabis and clear the way to erase nonviolent federal marijuana convictions, NBC news reported.

The vote would mark the first time a full chamber of Congress has taken up the issue of federally decriminalizing cannabis.

The Act is tipped to create new pathways for ownership opportunities in the emerging industry, allow military veterans to obtain medical cannabis recommendations from Veteran Affairs doctors and will also help establish funding sources to reinvest in communities that are the most affected by the war on drugs.

“It is the right thing to do. For too long, the war on drugs has targeted young people, especially Black people, and rejected the advice of experts,”said Rep. Earl Blumenauer who is the co-chairperson of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus and a co-sponsor of the Act.

“Public acceptance is at an all-time high,” he said. “This is an idea whose time has come,”he was quoted by NBC as saying.
