Roger Stone, who is known to be a close ally of former US President Donald Trump, was sued on Friday by the US Department of Justice, along with his wife, for evading federal taxes worth $2 million. However, Stone dismissed the allegations of the Justice Department and labeled them as “politically motivated”.
The lawsuit accuses the couple, who are known to advocate a conservative ideology, to fund their “lavish lifestyle” by disguising their payments through “Drake Ventures”, reported Associated Press.

Stone further claimed that he had no assets that the Department of Justice can claim through the lawsuit by stressing that he is “on the verge of bankruptcy”. He went on to blame the “corrupted Mueller investigation”, which was under the name of the former director of the FBI and addressed the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential elections in the US. Stone said the investigation had “left him destitute”.
The lawsuit, which was filed in a Florida federal court located in Fort Lauderdale, makes two separate allegations revolving around instances of tax evasion. The first claim says that the couple owes more than $1.5 million for underpaid taxes between 2007 and 2011.

The second claim suggests that an additional sum of $400,000 is owed by Stone for incomplete payment of his 2018 tax bill.
In an attempt to build up on his claim of the lawsuit having a political motivation, Stone said, “It’s particularly interesting that my tax attorneys were not told of this action, filed at close of business on a Friday”, reported Associated Press.
