Victoria Azarenka defeated six-time US Open champion Serena Williams in a three-set semi-final match on Thursday to progress into the women’s singles final of the US Open. The unseeded Belarusian came from behind to defeat Williams 1-6,6-3,6-3 in a match that lasted close to two hours.

Two-time Australian Open winner Azarenka will now face Naomi Osaka in Saturday’s women’s singles final. While Williams clinched the first set 6-1 with ease, Azarenka levelled the match in the second set winning it 6-3. She then went on to clinch the game 6-3 in the final set.

Williams, the six-time US Open champion who crashed out of the US Open, was aiming for her 24th Grand Slam Title.

Earlier, Naomi Osaka had defeated Jennifer Brady 7-6,3-6,6-3 to seal a spot in the final.

Fourth-seeded Osaka will now face Azarenka in the final. Osaka last won the US Open in 2018 and will be aiming for her second US Open title.

Azarenka, however, is yet to win a US Open but had reached the finals of the tournament in 2012 and 2013. The Belarusian will play her third US Open Women’s Singles final on Saturday.
