With the New York primaries over and Democratic governor Kathy Hochul seeking her first full term after Andrew Cuomo resigned in August 2021. She is set to go up against the Republican candidate Representative Lee Zeldin.
Despite the primaries in the Empire State being delayed from June 28 to August 23, the increased time to the election meant that candidates in key races would spend more time prepping. Key races in the state included the two special elections for House District 19 and 23. Other important races were for New York’s 10th, 12th and 17th Congressional house districts.
Democrat Pat Ryan and Republican Marc Molinaro went head to head for the chance to lead the 19th Congressional district of New York. In a close race for the seat, Ryan won out, winning 51.1% of the votes to Molinaro’s 48.9%.
For the New York’s 23rd Congressional district seat, Republican Joe Sempolinski went up against Democrat Max Della Pia. In yet another close race, Sempolinski won with 53.2% of the vote, to Della Pia’s 46.7%.
In New York’s 12th Congressional district, Jerrold Nadler (55.4%) beat Carolyn Maloney (24.4%) in the Democrat primaries. For the November 8 midterm elections, Nadler will be facing Republican Mike Zumbluskas.
