Washington’s primary elections will not be the usual pre-show to the midterm elections. The state follows a “top two” format for the primaries, which means the top two vote getters will advance to the November elections regardless of party.

Washington is also vote-by-mail state, which means that all registered voters in the state would have received a ballot days in advance. These can be mailed in latest by Tuesday, which means the result may take days.

Former US President Donald Trump may use his electoral playbook for the Washington elections. The Republican has attempted to counter GOP Congressional leaders who voted to impeach him in 2021. Two of those Republicans — Representatives Dan Newhouse and Jaime Herrera Beutler face primaries on Tuesday.

Trump has endorsed Joe Kent, a former Green Beret and a conservative cable show regular who echoes the former president’s grievances about the 2020 election outcome. Kent will be running against Herrera Beutler.

Danhouse, on the other hand, will be going against Trump backed candidate Loren Culp, a former small-town police chief who refused to concede the 2020 governor’s race to Democrat Jay Inslee.

In the US Senate, things look good for incumbent Senator Patty Murray, who looks to seal her sixth term in the upper chamber. Reports suggest that Murray may advance to the November elections alongside Republican Tiffany Smiley, a first-time political candidate.

Steve Hobbs, the incumbent Secretary of State in Washington, may face some challenges in Tuesday’s election. Hobbs, who was roped in by Washington governor Jay Inslee last year, will be facing Republicans like Pierce County auditor Julie Anderson, former Senator Mark Miloscia, Keith Wagoner and more. Other state legislative and non-Congressional offices are also up for elections on Tuesday.
