Wyoming is set to conduct its primary elections on August 16, 2022. The deeply Republican state’s polls are likely to be one final test for Donald Trump before the general elections in November.

More than 70% of Wyoming voters wanted Trump to win the 2020 elections, which he later claimed to be rigged. Joe Biden, a Democrat, received nearly 27% of the votes.

One of the biggest names on Wyoming’s ballot this year is going to be of Liz Cheney, a current Congresswoman and sharp critic of Trump. Cheney is also the vice president of the January 6 committee, which is investigating the former President.

Set to deny Cheney a fourth term as Wyoming’s lone member of the House is Harriet Hageman, a Cheyenne ranching industry attorney who was little known outside the state before winning Trump’s endorsement last year.

Hageman finished in the middle of a five-way, 2018 Republican gubernatorial primary. She’s campaigned aggressively for Cheney’s House seat, appearing at county fairs, parades and rodeos. Making his first public political appearance in Wyoming, Trump drew a crowd of at least 10,000 to a Casper rally supporting Hageman in May.

A defeat for Cheney would cap a swift, once unthinkable political collapse in a state where her name recognition is nearly universal and her family’s political roots run deep. Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, held the state’s House seat for 10 years until 1989.

Who else is on the ballot?

Wyoming’s elections this year will be small but impactful. In addition to the House of Representatives seat, Wyoming will only feature a gubernatorial race. The US Senate seats are not up for grabs.

Mark Gordon, a Republican, is contesting the primaries to retain his seat. While he does not face much competition, the Democratic side has only two challengers: Theresa Livingston and Rex Wilde.
