The days to the midterm elections on November 8, 2022 are inching closer as the primaries are winding down. Both Republicans and Democrats are gearing up for what are likely to be two and a half month long gritty campaigns as the parties vie for majority in Congress.

Predominantly a Blue state, the Republican party is likely to want to turn things their way, however difficult that might prove to be. To defeat the incumbent Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal, the Grand Old Party has three candidates battling it out for a chance to replace him: Leora Levy, Themis Klarides and Peter Lumaj. The nomination was expected to go to Klarides who has been seen as a moderate, given her support for abortion rights. She was the first woman House leader for the Republicans in Connecticut

Leora Levy won out instead, just a day after former US President Donald Trump endorsed his candidacy. Republican voters seem to have cut ties with Klarides who had rejected Trump’s rhetoric, which has cost her dearly. Both Levy and Lumaj appropriated the former president’s, attacking Klarides for being pro-abortion.

Levy had won 50.6% of the votes, Klarides 40% and Lamaj 9.5% at the last updated count.

t’s really exciting. This is just chapter one. We’ve got the longer chapter ahead. … This has been an amazing experience for me. … My sister and I escaped communist Cuba. … This is our story, and our journey was tragedy and sacrifice. But it was hope at the end. And we found hope here in America. My American Dream is I am a candidate here for the U.S. Senate,” Levy said while giving her victory speech.

As far as the race for the secretary of state goes, Democrat nominee Stephanie Thomas steamrolled her fellow candidate Maritza Bond, winning 75.8% of the Democrat votes. On the Republican side, Dominic Rapin won the nomination, with 58.7% of the votes, to Terrie Wood’s 41.3%.

Blumenthal is likely to face a tough fight in the upcoming midterm elections. Despite being in his second term, his approval ratings have fallen below 50% and things are unlikely to get better from here on out.
