US Representative Val Demings has won the Democratic Party’s primaries for the US Senate in Florida. She is set to face the incumbent senator Marco Rubio of the Republican Party in the general election.

Demings has been the US Representative of Florida’s 10th congressional district since 2017. She is currently a member of the New Democratic Coalition and the Congressional Black Caucus. During former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, it was Demings who served as the impeachment manager. She has a long history in crime-fighting, having served as the Chief of the Orlando Police Department from 1983 to 2011.
She was also on President Joe Biden’s shortlist to enter his campaign as the vice presidential candidate. Demings had focused on her history with law enforcement in a promotional video for her campaign. You can have a look at the video here:
Demings is likely to have a tough fight in the general election against Rubio, who has won the seat for two consecutive terms, one coming after his failed bid to secure the Republican Party nomination for the 2016 presidential elections.

PolitiFact, a nonprofit organization, revealed that Demings’ claims that Rubio was in support of tax hikes were untrue. The two of them have already spoken out against each other publicly. NPR suggests that Demings has been able to collect more funds for her election campaign than Rubio, something that is very unusual when it comes to a sitting senator.
Demings is a supporter of strict gun laws. She has publicly said that she wants to keep firearms away from “people who seek to do harm”. She is also a supporter of the Affordable Care Act.
