Hawaii will have its primary elections on August 13, 2022. With the governor’s office, one Senate and two House of Representatives seats, this year’s elections have high stakes.

A drastic shift is likely to be seen in the legislative races this year, as only a few incumbents are eligible for re-election. Hawaii governor David Ige is term-limited.

The electoral issues in Hawaii are usually not similar to those of the mainland United States. Here are the key issues that are likely to influence how voters cast their ballot:

Tourism revival

Hawaii, a small island state, is primarily dependent on the tourism industry to nourish its economy. The impact of COVID-19 is still being felt in Hawaii, with tourist flow significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Promises to revive Hawaii’s tourism industry were made by Patrick Pihana Branco, who is running for the state’s second Congressional district.

Recreational marijuana

While medical marijuana has been legal in the state of Hawaii, its recreational use has still been a partisan issue. Candidates running for governor have largely spoken in favour of legalising marijuana.

Vicky Cayetano, a member of the Democratic party, is the only one who has said he stands against the legalisation of recreational marijuana in Hawaii.

Climate change

Climate change is likely to be one of the top issues that will influence Hawaii voters. The island state has been put on the frontline of the impact of climate change. Hawaii has been facing rising air and ocean temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns and rising sea levels.

Multiple candidates on the primary ballot have vowed to prioritise climate control in Hawaii.

Jill Tokuda, who served in the state Senate for 12 years, said that  she supports the White House’s efforts to have the Department of Defense lead in renewable energy, seeing the issue as a matter of national security.
