New York will hold its second round of primary elections on August 23, 2022 after legislators redrew the Congressional map. Tuesday’s primaries will not have the state offices (Governor and Attorney General) on the ballot, putting the focus back on the US House of Representatives.
The new Congressional maps have triggered a contest in the 12th district of New York. US Representative Jerrold Nadler will face off Carolyn Maloney, both experienced Democratic lawmakers.

Their districts were redrawn and partially combined, after which negotiations between the two legislators failed. Both decided to contest the same district. Indian origin Suraj Patel also entered the race, projecting himself as the younger alternative for the district.
Representative Nadler’s decision to contest the 12th district has left a vacancy in the 10th district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The election ballot for the 10th district has now become crowded with names like Mondaire Jones (US Representative), Elizabeth Holtzman (once the youngest Congresswoman) and Daniel Goldman (an investigator in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial).
According to New York Times, the spotlight is now on Carlina Rivera and Yuh-Line Niou, both of whom have gained momentum in the Democratic primary.

Another interesting race unfolds in the 23rd Congressional district in western New York. Republicans Nick Langworthy and Carl Paladino will be facing each other in the upcoming primary. While Langworthy is also the New York Republican Party chairman, his opponent has made headlines for making racist, sexist and homophobic statements.
Langworthy and Paladino — both loyal supporters of former US President Donald Trump — will be contesting for the House seat that was vacated by US Representative Lee Zeldin earlier this year. He is now the Republican candidate in New York’s governor race and will face incumbent Kathy Hochul in November.
