Liz Cheney, a Republican, was voted out of US Congress in Tuesday’s primary election in Wyoming. The House Representative is one of the few Republican lawmakers who have openly opposed and criticised former US president Donald Trump.

Cheney, 56, lost to Harriet Hageman, who had received Trump’s endorsement. The former President was not on the ballot in Wyoming, but his clout eclipsed Cheney’s electoral contest on Tuesday.

Cheney described Tuesday’s outcome as “the first step in a much larger fight” and said that her “work is far from over”, Associated Press reported.

While Hagerman now advances to the general elections in November, Liz Cheney would only hold office till the polls are concluded.

Liz Cheney, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney, was the Vice Chair of the January 6th Committee. The House panel, consisting of two Republicans, has been probing Trump for his involvement in the Capitol riots.

Her quest to hold Trump accountable goes beyond the January 6 committee. Liz Cheney was also one of few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year. She also pushed past GOP censures and death threats.

What is next for Liz Cheney?

Liz Cheney will not return to the US Congress– at least till the next elections. The Congresswoman has not clarified her plans. For now, Cheney will serve as the Wyoming Representative till her term expires in January next year.

She will also continue in her leadership role on the congressional panel investigating the January 6 attack until it dissolves at the end of the year.

According to news agency Associated Press, Cheney is also actively considering a 2024 White House bid — as a Republican or independent — having vowed to do everything in her power to fight Trump’s influence in her party.
