Seth Magaziner and Allan Fung will contest the upcoming Rhode Island midterm elections in November. The two will appear on the ballot for the state’s 2nd Congressional district, which was opened up for grabs after US Representative Jim Langevin announced his retirement.

Seth Magaziner, a member of the Democratic party, won more than 29,000 votes (54%) in Tuesday’s primary election. He defeated popular candidates like Sarah Morgenthau, Joy Fox and Omar Bah. Allan Fung, a member of the Republican party, was running unopposed in the polls.

Magaziner was considered to be a frontrunner in the Democratic primary race. He was also endorsed by multiple Rhode Island officials, including outgoing Congressman Jim Langevin.

Allan Fung automatically advanced to the midterm elections on Tuesday, with no other Republican vying for the nomination. Fung will be competing in Rhode Island, considered to be a Democratic stronghold.

However, he is likely to be supported by his reputation of a popular former Rhode Island mayor. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy also visited Rhode Island in August to raise money for Fung.

The 2nd Congressional District seat has been held by Democrats for more than three decades in a state traditionally dominated by the party. National Republican leaders think now is their best chance to flip it, news agency Associated Press reported.

Most Democratic races in Rhode Island’s primaries on Tuesday were crowded. Governor Dan McKee had to beat at least four other candidates, who were previously thought to be frontrunners. McKee won 32% of the votes, while Helena Foulkes thinly missed out and secured 30% of the ballots.

Incumbent candidate McKee will now face Ashley Kalus in the November elections. Kalus comfortably won the Republican party’s primary election, securing 83.7% of the votes. Jonathan Riccitelli got 16.3% of the votes.
