As the US prepares to take on England in the Group B match at the FIFA World Cup on Friday, USMNT has a special message for their favourite star Taylor Swift. In a tweet few hours before the match in Doha, USMNT said that they are going to make Swift “Miss Americana” proud today.

“@taylorswift13 we know you love your London Boy… but we’re gonna do our best to make Miss Americana proud today,” the post said. There was a photo of a USMNT jersey with Swift’s name on the back attached to the tweet.

Swift, however, hasn’t replied to the tweet yet.

It seems that USMNT is obsessed with the 32-year-old singer who broke many records with her recent album Midnights. Last month the USMNT Twitter handle shared a video of Walker Zimmerman singing Swift’s hit number All Too Well.

The USMNT had a bad start to the World Cup campaign after a 1-1 draw against Wales. They were the favourites to win the match but Gareth Bale-led Wales held firm and equalised with a penalty.

Although the tweet buzzed up the internet with fans around the world amused by it, many also found it cringeworthy.

Even if it’s not apparent on the surface, the ‘London boy’ was a clear reference to Joe Alwyn, the English actor. Alwyn and Swift have been dating since 2016 after Swift parted ways with Harry Styles.

Incidentally, all of Taylor Swift’s dates have been from London, so the USMNT tweet is likely to hit hard for the singer’s fans. Alwyn, Styles and Tom Hiddleston, whom she dated before Styles, are all from London.

Her song, London Boy, was most likely a dedication to Alwyn.
