A tornado warning was issued for areas of Virginia Beach Sunday night. The warning expired at 6:15 pm, according to National Weather Service. 10 On Your Side has received several reports of damage in Virginia Beach.

The city witnessed a tornado on the ground in the River Road area and North Great Neck Road at 6:07 PM. “Current damages include trees down including on a residence and a vehicle,” the city wrote on Twitter.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department reported calls for severe storm damage in the Great Neck area, soon after the NWS at Wakefield issued a tornado warning for the area. Fire teams reported there may be possible gas leaks.

The NWS confirmed seeing a debris signature for a tornado on its radars, which means meteorologists could see debris caused by the storm.

Meteorologist Allison Mitchell said the storm that caused the tornado passed as of 6:45 PM. There is a chance of heavy rain and localized flooding in the area.

The National Weather Service urged the public to stay inside to avoid possible debris picked up by the wind and not drive through flooded roadways.

People shared pictures of the damage on social media. “This is awful news coming out of Virginia Beach praying to all those affected,” a user wrote.

Approx 3,000 Dominion Energy customers in Hampton Roads were without power as of 7:45 PM, as per the utility’s map.

According to the City of Virginia Beach, the Great Neck Recreation Centre, 2521 Shorehaven Drive is open for residents who have been impacted by the storm, and pets are also allowed.

The Something in the Water festival at the Oceanfront was also canceled due to Sunday’s storms.
