On Thursday afternoon, an individual opened fire in a manufacturing plant in Smithsburg, Maryland, killing three people and injuring another, while a state trooper was injured in a gunfight with the suspect.

Deputies responded to an active shooting at Columbia Machine, Inc. on Bikle Road in Smithsburg around 2:30 p.m.

Aside from the three deaths, one person was in critical condition; initially, officials said four people had been injured. There was no indication of the victims’ identities or if they were employees at the time.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, a Maryland state trooper engaged in a shootout with the suspect shortly after the event on Mapleville Road, about five miles south of the plant.

The trooper was hurt, and the suspect was hurt and sent to the hospital. His current state is unclear.

In a Facebook Live video shared by Harleigh Rae, she is seen located near the intersection where the final showdown between the police and the suspect took place. Gunshots can be heard in the background of the video.

Rae captures the rushing of police vehicles to the spot. “They must have been following him for a while or else they wouldn’t have had these many people already,” she says, unsure at the time of where the chase originated.

She then goes on to claim that the suspect started shooting at the police before they could leave their cars.

Rae is also repeatedly heard warning the viewers to avoid the particular intersection in Smithsburg, Maryland as all roads were sealed off by the police.
