Officials reported Friday that a US Army soldier stationed in Texas was discovered alive 11 days after he was reported missing and days after his wife died.

Spc. Craig Chamberlain, of the 704th Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), had been gone for two weeks while posted at Fort Cavazos, previously referred to as Fort Hood, in Killeen. He was reported missing on May 15 and located on Friday, according to the Army.

It is one of the world’s largest military stations, located around 60 miles north of Austin and 50 miles southwest of Waco. It has a geographic area of approximately 340 square miles and is home to numerous units and organizations of the United States Army.

“We are thankful that Specialist Chamberlain has been found. We will continue to provide him with the care and assistance he needs. We will also continue to collaborate with CID as they conduct a thorough investigation into this matter,” the commander of the 2nd Chemical Battalion, Lt. Col. Zachary Brainard, said in a statement.

What happened to Craig Chamberlain?

According to material obtained by investigators, Army officials believe Chamberlain “willfully absented himself.”

Cameron Chamberlain, Chamberlain’s wife, died, according to the Army. Her cause of death has not been revealed, nor has it been linked to her husband’s abduction.

“The III Armored Corps is deeply saddened to learn of Cameron Chamberlain’s death, the wife of Army Spc. Craig Chamberlain.” Our heartfelt condolences go out to Cameron Chamberlain’s family and friends,” the Army stated in a statement, according to FOX Austin.

Cameron Chamberlain told KWTX-TV before to her death that her husband’s mental condition had deteriorated in recent months.
