Representative Paul Gosar will go up in a censure vote in the United States House of Representatives on Wednesday. The Republican politician from Arizona could face severe political consequences in the legislative body pushes through the vote.

Why is this happening?

Earlier this month, Gosar posted a video on his social media handles that showed an animated video of him hitting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rival Democrat Representative from New York, with a sword and also attacking United States President Joe Biden.

Multiple lawmakers, including Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have spoken out against the social media post.

What are the consequences of the vote?

If and when the proposed resolution is adopted in the House of Representatives, Gosar will be required to stand in the well while the resolution is read out loud by whoever is presiding over the chamber, according to reports from CNN.

Gosar may also be ousted from the core House committees. These include House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.

“If Democrats do something as egregious as Mr. Gosar, they ought to be censured about it,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said. “This is not a partisan issue. This is an issue about safety”, according to reports from Associated Press.

It would be the second time this year the majority has initiated the removal of a GOP lawmaker from an assigned committee, the first being Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.

“We cannot dismiss Representative Gosar’s violent fantasies as a joke,” Democratic Representative Mary Gay Scanlon, said from the House floor. “He is a public figure and as we vividly saw on January 6, the words and actions of public figures rapidly spark the tinder of radical extremism, and God help us all when that happens.”
