The White House committee investigating the Capitol Hill attack on January 6, 2021 will resume its hearings, with the next one slated to be held on Thursday, October 13 2022.
The public hearing is unlikely to bring any new witnesses to testify on-site, according to a report from CNN. However, there is a chance that pre-taped interviews with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Secretary of Treasury Steve Mnuchin will be shown.
Here’s what has been discussed in the last 8 Jan 6 hearings so far.
June 9 hearing
Republican Liz Cheney who is a part of the committee called the Jan 6 riots part of a “sophisticated, seven-part plan to overturn the presidential election.”
June 13 hearing
Evidence released throughout the hearing showed that former president Donald Trump was aware that he had lost the 2020 presidential election but chose to continue a disinformation campaign. Former Attorney General Bill Barr testified that advisors had told Trump that his claims were bogus yet he chose to ignore them.
June 16 hearing
Testimonies revealed that Trump and some of his allies had attempted to convince former Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election through a tenuous legal interpretation of the law. Pence declined, with his former legal counsel Greg Jacob saying that it was “unambiguous that the vice president does not have the authority to reject electors.”
June 21 hearing
State election officials described being threatened by Trump to overturn the elections, with Republican officials from Arizona, Michigan and Pennsylvania saying that they were pressured to flip the results to be in favour of the former US president.
June 23 hearing
Evidence was released how Trump went a step further and attempted to force Justice Department officials to claim the elections were a fraud.
June 28 hearing
Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson described how Trump prepared for January 6 and said that he wanted to join the protestors at Capitol Hill. So much so that Trump grabbed the wheel of the car he was travelling in, to make the Secret Service take him there.
July 12 hearing
This hearing focussed on what Trump said in the leadup to the Jan 6 riots, including his “Stop the Steal” rally and how he spurred the mob towards Capitol Hill.
July 21 hearing
The final hearing so far included testimonials from former White House aides Sarah Matthews and Matthew Pottinger who testified that Trump refused to take any action to address the ongoing riot on Capitol hill on Jan 6. Later, the committee played a video which included outtakes which showed Trump refusing to say that the election was over.
