The gunshots were reported near a car exhibition that was taking place on Sunday in Peck Park, a favourite recreational venue for San Pedro residents.

Peck Park is a public park in the San Pedro neighbourhood of Los Angeles, California. 560 Western Avenue, near the junction with Summerland Avenue, is the park’s official address. The City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks is in charge of Peck Park.

There is a swimming pool, a baseball diamond, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, large hiking paths, and a child care centre at the park. Koning Eizenberg Architecture, Inc. constructed the Peck Park gymnasium in 1997.

The park is the largest of four named after famous land owner and developer George H. Peck and his family; Peck began donating land to the city for the park in 1929. His three children are commemorated by the names of the other three parks (Rena, Alma, and Leland).

Gun violence occurs frequently in Los Angeles. Last week, downtown Los Angeles police officers responded to a call in which at least four people were shot.

California’s gun restrictions are among the most stringent in the country. For the sale, delivery, loan, or transfer of any handgun, a five-year Firearm Safety Certificate must be obtained by paying a $25 fee, submitting applicant data to the state, and passing a written test proctored by a DOJ Certified Instructor. Dealers must sell “California legal” handguns that are listed on the state’s Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale.
