Siddhant Shah and Aryan Vaidya have disappeared while swimming with friends on Saturday. Search and rescue crews have been looking for the two students ever since.

Who are Siddhant Shah and Aryan Vaidya?

Siddhant Shah and Aryan Vaidya two Indiana University students who went missing while swimming at Monroe Lake, about 15 miles south of IU’s Bloomington campus, on Saturday afternoon. Shah was 19 years old and Vaidya was 20.

When the group of friends stopped to go swimming on Saturday, Shah and Vaidya were sailing on a pontoon. According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, both men disappeared and their companions made desperate attempts to rescue them but were unsuccessful. The boys never resurfaced.

Scuba divers and side scan sonar were used by the search and rescue teams that were dispatched to help. However, because of the darkness, they stopped working at night. The team picked up again and has kept looking since the beginning of this week.

“It’s been a challenge with this one,” said Lt. Angela Goldman, conservation officer with the Indiana DNR. “You can see around me, obviously the wind is very strong today, 20-25 mile an hour wind, which is causing incredibly rough waters. A lot of our high-tech equipment, the sonar equipment, needs a smoother water surface and so the constant agitation of the boat skews that sonar and so that’s proving very difficult to use in those conditions.”

Additionally, a statement concerning the missing students was also issued by Indiana University stating, “We are deeply saddened by the news that Siddhant Shah and Aryan Vaidya, both students in the Kelley School of Business, are currently missing at Lake Monroe.”

The remainder of the group was taken back to campus by IU Student Services, which is now offering counseling services to them.
