The wealthy real estate developer Ted Lerner passed away on Sunday at the age of 97 in his Chevy Chase, Maryland, home. Lerner was the man who acquired the struggling Washington Nationals in 2006 and supervised their remarkable rise to World Series champions in 2019, awarding his hometown with its first major league championship in 95 years.
Jennifer Mastin Giglio, the Nationals’ chief communications officer, announced Ted’s death and stated that the reason was pneumonia complications.
Who are Ted Lerner’s children?
Ted Lerner is survived by his wife of 71 years, Annette Morris Lerner, and his children. The couple has a son and two daughters namely Mark D. Lerner, Debra Lerner Cohen, and Marla Lerner Tanenbaum. They also have nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
The Nationals selected the son of Lerner’s three children to serve as managing principal owner of the organization in 2018. He is an American businessman who serves as Lerner Enterprises’ managing principal owner as well as the team’s primary owner in Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals.
Lerner discovered he has spindle cell sarcoma above his left knee in January 2017. His left leg was amputated in April of the same year because radiation-related wounds did not heal correctly.
Marla and Debra, along with brother Mark, are the Washington Nationals’ major shareholders. Moreover, Debra is married to Edward Cohen and Marla is the chairperson of the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation.
After the Nationals were relocated from Montreal to the nation’s capital, Lerner’s organization paid Major League Baseball $450 million to acquire the team. The Nationals, who were among baseball’s weakest teams during their initial few years in Washington, became World Series champions in 2019 under the Lerners’ management.
Since Nationals Park opened in 2008, the Lerners are also recognized for reviving the city’s Navy Yard neighborhood.
