Carolyn Maloney, a Democrat, is contesting for the congressional seat in the second primary elections in New York. The elections are scheduled to commence on 23rd August. 

Maloney is currently representing the Upper East Side in the 12th District and will square off against Representative Herry Nadler and attorney Suraj Patel.

Who is Carolyn Maloney? 

Carolyn Maloney, 76, was born in North Carolina, where she attended Greensboro College. She moved to New York in 1970 and started working for the New York State Legislature and soon climbed up to senior positions in both the State Assembly and State Senate. 

She began her political career in 1982 by defeating Robert Rodriguez in a primarily Spanish-speaking district which also included East
Harlem. She had already served on the New York City Council for 10 years.

In the 2020 Democratic primary, Carolyn Maloney ran against Suraj Patel, Democrat Lauren Ashcraf and activist Peter Harrison. She defeated Suraj Patel by 4%, in terms of votes 3,700 to win the elections. 

In the 2016 Presidential elections, she was an early supporter of former Secretary of State and Senator Hillary Clinton. As of today, Maloney is the 20th in the seniority of the House. 

Throughout her political career, she has been very vocal about gender-based issues and was the first to recognise same-sex domestic
partnerships. Maloney was the first person to give birth while serving as a council member, and the first to offer a comprehensive package of legislation to make daycare more available and affordable.

Besides serving as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, Maloney is also a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee and the Joint Economic Committee. In the House Democratic Caucus, she has served as a Regional Whip and as Vice-Chair of the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
