Christina Koch, NASA astronaut will become the first woman in history to go around the Moon. On April 3, NASA introduced a four-member team chosen to fly as early as next year or early 2025 on the first crewed voyage around the moon after almost 50 years.

Koch will become the first woman astronaut ever assigned to a lunar mission and Victor Glover will be the first African-American astronaut on one. They will join Jeremy Hansen and Reid Wiseman to fly a capsule around the moon. The astronauts will not land on the Moon, but their mission will clear the path for a touchdown by a subsequent crew.

The three United States and one Canadian were presented to the public at an event in Houston, Texas. They will now start a period of intense training to get themselves ready for the NASA Artemis 2 mission.

Christina Hammock Koch is an electrical engineer. She was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013.

Age and Education

Koch was born on January 29, 1979, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is 44 years old. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and physics. Koch also holds a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from North Carolina State University. She was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. by North Carolina State University.

Career

Koch worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center while pursuing advanced studies. She also served as a Research in the United States Antarctic Program. Before joining NASA, she worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as station chief for American Samoa. She has worked as a flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS) for Expeditions 59, 60, and 61.

In 2001, Koch graduated from the NASA Academy program at Goddard Space Flight Center. On December 28, 2019, Koch broke the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days. She came back from space on February 6, 2020. She also participated in the first all-female spacewalk in October 2019 along with NASA astronaut Jessica Meir.
