Congressman Darren Soto is representing Florida’s 9th Congressional District. He is all set to re-run for the congressional seat in the Democratic primary election which is scheduled for today, 23rd August 2022. 

The Democratic
representative remains unopposed in the primary and will face the winner of the
Republican primary in November. Currently, Walt Disney World  Executive Jose
Castillo, Christian non-profit worker Scotty Moore, pastor, and Republican
activist Adianis Morales, and real-estate broker Sergio Otez will race off for
the Republican seat.

Who is Darren Soto?

Darren Soto, 44, was
born in New Jersey to a Puerto Rican father and an Italian American mother. An
attorney by profession, Soto earned his bachelor’s from Rutgers College and
then went on to pursue Law from George Washington University. 

Soto began his political
career in 2006 and ran for the Florida House of Representatives, but faced
defeat by Andy Gardiner.

Soto also served in
the Florida State Senate, where he held the position of Deputy Minority Whip
from 2012 to 2014. Soto was appointed as the Committee member on Agriculture and Natural Resources at the start of the 116th Congress.

In 2018, Darren Soto
was wrapped in controversy when his wife Amanda Soto was arrested at Walt
Disney and charged with disorderly intoxication. He later released a statement
clarifying that his wife was undergoing treatment for depression and was deeply
regretful of her actions. 

Soto strongly
supports gun control and has passed several policies to ensure background
checks on gun purchases. In 2017, he was named as the greenest member by the
Florida Congressional for implementing several pro-environmental
policies such as the Wild and Scenic River Study Act of 2017, the Shark and
Billfish Protection Act and raising funding for the National Estuary Program and
the National Wildlife Refuge System program.
