A shooting incident at Irving Plaza on May 25, 2016, left one dead and several injured, leading to a high-profile murder trial in Manhattan Supreme Court. The case involves rapper Troy Ave and podcaster Daryl Campbell, also known as Taxstone, who allegedly had a longstanding feud that resulted in the deadly altercation.

Who is Daryl Campbell?

Daryl Campbell, who was born on August 14, 1985, is a former rapper and now a television and Twitter personality. He is widely recognized for his Tax Season podcast on the Loud Speakers Network and his active presence on Twitter. Campbell was previously identified as a member of the Bloods gang, but he has since disavowed any association with them.

The Brooklyn-born musician was arrested in connection with the May 2016 shooting at Irving Plaza, where Troy Ave’s bodyguard, Ronald McPhatter, was killed and Troy Ave was injured. He was charged with murder, attempted murder, assault, and weapons possession. 

According to court papers, Campbell’s DNA was found on the 9mm handgun used in the shooting.

During Troy Ave’s testimony at Campbell’s trial, he described grappling with Campbell over the gun and being shot in both legs before finally getting the gun himself. Troy Ave testified that he then had Campbell in his sights but the gun misfired, and he later found his bodyguard lying on the ground, fatally wounded.

Campbell had initially denied any involvement in the shooting and claimed that he had been set up. However, he was eventually charged and indicted for his alleged role in the incident.

As of 2021, Campbell remains incarcerated awaiting trial. All charges against Troy Ave, including attempted murder and gun possession charges, were eventually dropped. According to Troy Ave’s lawyer, he received a plea deal for a one-year sentence in exchange for his testimony at Campbell’s trial.
