Diana Lynn Harshbarger is an American politician who represents Tennessee‘s 1st congressional district. The district’s headquarters are in the Tri-Cities area of northeastern Tennessee. She is also a pharmacist and businesswoman. 

Harshbarger was born in Kingsport, Tennessee, and raised in Bloomingdale, Tennessee.

Harshbarger declared her candidacy to succeed Phil Roe in the 1st congressional district of Tennessee after the six-term incumbent and fellow Republican Phil Roe decided to leave the US House of Representatives.

She defeated Democratic nominee Blair Walsingham in the general election in November after winning the 17-candidate Republican primary on August 5.

Her victory in the primary effectively gave her a seat in Congress because the 1st is one of the few historically Republican districts in the South, Republicans have held it for all but four years since 1861, and Democrats have only received as much as 40% of the vote twice since 1898.

After Diane Black and Marsha Blackburn, Harshbarger was the third woman elected to Congress from Tennessee who did not serve as her husband’s replacement when she took office on January 3, 2021.

Harshbarger is only the ninth person to hold the seat in the past century; the 1st has a history of giving its incumbents very long terms in Washington.

During the Republican primary, her opponents chastised her for allegedly being involved with American Inhalation Medication Specialists, a company run by her husband that sold mislabeled pharmaceuticals from China.

She is the first member of her family to complete high school. East Tennessee State University awarded her a bachelor’s degree, and Mercer University awarded her a Doctor of Pharmacy.

Premier Pharmacy, which she and her husband, Bob own, is a compounding pharmacy.
