Donald Trump, born on June 14, 1946, in New York is the 45th President of the United States who served in office from 2017 to 2021. Trump started off as a real-estate developer and businessman who owned, operated, or licenced his name to various hotels, casinos, golf courses, resorts, and residential complexes in and around New York City.

Business career

Since the 1980s, Trump has also lent his name to a slew of retail businesses, including branded lines of clothes, perfume, food, and furniture, as well as Trump University, which offered real-estate education seminars from 2005 to 2010. In the early twenty-first century, his private conglomerate, the Trump Organization, included around 500 entities operating in a variety of sectors, including hotels and resorts, residential properties, goods, entertainment, and television.

Presidential career highlights

Trump was the third president in the history of the U.S. to be impeached by the House of Representatives (after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998), and the only president to be impeached twice—once (in 2019) for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in connection with the Ukraine scandal, and once (in 2021) for “incitement of insurrection” in relation with the riots of the United States Capitol by a violent mob of Trump supporters as Congress met in joint session.

Trump was acquitted on both counts of impeachment by the United States Senate. Trump was defeated by former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, 306 electoral votes to 232; he was defeated in the popular vote by more than seven million votes.

Family

Trump married Czech model Ivana Zelnková Winklmayr in 1977, with whom he had three children—Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric—before the pair separated in 1992. During the 1980s, the tabloid press in New York City was obsessed with their marriage and Trump’s business dealings.

Trump married American actor Marla Maples after Tiffany, Trump’s fourth child, was born in 1993. In 1999, their marriage ended in divorce.

Trump married Slovene model Melania Knauss in 2005, and their son Barron was born the following year. Melania Trump became the United States’ second foreign-born first lady upon Trump’s inauguration as president in 2017.
