Dr. Caitlin Bernard is under investigation by Indiana state’s Attorney General Todd Rokita for providing abortion services to a 10-year-old rape victim. The girl-from neighbouring Ohio- travelled across state borders to receive treatment from the doctor. After the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade, Ohio recently banned all abortions after six weeks into gestation. The girl, six weeks and three days into her pregnancy, made the journey within a week of the ruling.

Dr Bernard is presently an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Indiana University School of Medicine since 2017. After completing her undergraduate program at New York’s Binghampton University in 2006, she completed her MD in 2010 from the State University of New York’s (SUNY) Upstate Medical University. In addition, she is a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation from Washington University’s St. Louis campus. She has since conducted postgraduate medical training in family planning, obstetrics and gynaecology at SUNY Upstate and Washington University.

She is licensed to practice in New York and Missouri and holds licensure in Indiana presently. She has a diploma from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr Bernard serves as co-director of research at the AMPATH Reproductive Health Working Group and holds leadership roles at Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky. She is also a member of the Alpha Omega Honor Society, the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals and the Society for Family Planning.

Aside from her roles at Indiana University, she serves as an assistant visiting professor at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. Her research has appeared in numerous medical journals. She has also co-contributed a chapter in the book ‘Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery: A Practical Guide.

While there is much to illuminate her research interests and professional career, her personal life remains largely unknown.
