The Rex Organization named Evaline Finlay Gomila as its 2023 Queen of Carnival on Saturday, February 18.
Gomila claimed that she never imagined that Rex would honor her on Mardi Gras. It’s undoubtedly something she has always wished for, but she never imagined it would be her. Hence, receiving this distinction was made all the more special.

Who is Evaline Finlay Gomila?
Evaline Finlay Gomila is a 21-year-old student at the University of Virginia. She is the daughter of Gwathmey and Moylan Gomila. Her father rides with Rex every year as a lieutenant. Gomila is a computer science major who also has a minor in economics. She intends to start working for a bank in Washington, D.C., specializing in business analytics, when she graduates from Virginia this spring.
This honor is a privilege for someone who already supports others in her community, both in Charlottesville and New Orleans. And being chosen as Queen will encourage her to work even more on behalf of Rex’s humanitarian cause.

Evaline recalled the day her parents informed her that she was given the title of Queen while they were riding horses in Virginia.
”He was holding his Rex lieutenant’s crop with the purple, green and gold ribbons and a little gold crown tied onto it, and I just sort of stared,” she said. “I didn’t get why did he bring that all the way up from New Orleans. And, eventually, he said, ‘You are going to be the Queen of Carnival,’ and it was so exciting and fun. Special memory.”
