Houston Police responded to a call from Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s residence on Tuesday night. Reports revealed that the Houston Police Department responded to reports of a 14-year-old girl with self-inflicted stab wounds, in the arms of the Neighborhood of River Oak, where the senator resides with his wife Heidi Cruz, and two daughters.

Authorities said that the unidentified child was taken to the hospital, but refused to comment on whether a member of the Cruz family was involved.

Cruz’s office made a statement late Tuesday that the Republican lawmaker’s daughter is OK while asking for the privacy of the family.

“There were no serious injuries. The family requests the media respect their daughter’s privacy at this time,” Cruz’s office said.

Who is Heidi Cruz?

Heidi Cruz (née Nelson) was born in 1972 in San Luis Obispo, California to parents who were dentists and members of Seventh-day Adventist.

At the age of 12, Cruz reportedly came across an article by TIME Magazine about the 1980 presidential elections, and afterwards she started aiming for a job in the government.

Cruz graduated from a liberal arts college and went on to study at Harvard Business School, later on securing a place as US trade deputy in the White House and then as director of the Treasury’s Latin American desk, for which she taught herself Spanish.

Cruz landed her dream job as director of Western Hemisphere in 2003.

The same year, Cruz’s husband Ted Cruz was not really successful in his career, therefore leaving Washington for Austin and a role as Texas’ solicitor general.

After a two year long distance relationship, in 2004, Cruz made the move to fly over to Texas, securing a job at Merrilyn Lynch, working 80 hours a week to become the breadwinner of the family and taking care of two daughters.

Cruz remained an active member of the Council of Foreign Relations and was a member of the Independent Task Force on North America, which published a report called Building a North American Community.
