A Tallahassee charter school principal is out of job after some parents complained about a sixth-grade art history lesson, saying Michelangelo’s statue of David was pornographic. It is arguably one of the most famous sculptures in the world.
Hope Carrasquilla was kicked out of Tallahassee Classical School this week after three parents objected to the curriculum, reported the Tallahassee Democrat.
Two said they wished they’d been made aware that kids were seeing images of the sculpture before, and one called it pornographic.

Hope Carrasquilla said she was saddened that her short stint at the school came to an end, reported The Tallahassee Democrat. She was only on the job for a year. Tallahassee Classical School is a charter school on Florida’s Panhandle.

According to Carrasquilla’s LinkedIn profile, she completed her elementary education at Florida State University in 1992. She earned her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the American College of Education in 2021.
Over the 20 years, she has taught in all forms of schools: public, private, and charter. She worked as Dean of Students at Christ Classical Academy for more than 10 years.

The incident outlines yet another point of contention in the ongoing debate around America’s schools.
According to HuffPost, the now-former principal said the situation was a little more complicated that that, noting that the usual protocol is to send parents a letter before students are shown such classical artwork.

Due to “a series of miscommunications,” the letter did not go out to the sixth-grade parents, and some complained, she said.
Carrasquilla was the school’s third principal since it opened in the fall of 2020, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. She said many other parents and faculty members were upset about her ouster and have been reaching out with support.

The marble sculpture of the Biblical figure David was made between 1501 and 1504, originally commissioned for display inside an Italian cathedral. It now resides at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence.
