John Andrew Bazor Jr. was arrested on Monday after threatening to terminate President Joe Biden in a phone call to the White House. Traced to a Home2Suites hotel in Mobile- a port city on Alabama’s Gulf Coast- the Alabama resident has a history of mental health issues but hasn’t received a diagnosis for the same. According to the affidavit filed against Bazor Jr., the 37-year-old called the White House switchboard saying, “I am coming to assassinate the president. I can’t wait to see your faces when I put a bullet in him.”

Bazor Jr. left multiple long-winded voicemail messages at the United States Secret Service’s (USSS) Mobile Resident Office over the July 9 weekend. Not content with his little derring-do, he also went to the FBI’s Mobile office to file a complaint, perhaps against the USSS. A resident of the USSS office in Mobile revealed that he had spotted Bazor Jr. (or at least someone with close likeness) ranting about how the Secret Service had ruined his life inside their premises.

The affidavit also states that his mother had tried to get him admitted to psychiatric help, even sending him to Mobile Infirmary in 2017. However, he did not receive treatment at the facility. Known to be off-kilter, Bazor Jr. also threatened to blow up a hotel in Mobile. It took a week for investigators to locate his potential address, finally zeroing in on the Satchel Paige Drive location after speaking to his mother and aunt.

Bazor admitted to making the call when questioned by officials but began to get tetchy when pressed further. Delirious, he refused to engage with counsellors who had come to speak to him -most likely on his sister’s insistence- prompting his arrest. A known user of narcotics, Bazor has a history of physical violence and assault, including lashing out at his sister’s ex-boyfriend with a shower rod.
