John Hao, a 20-year-old Michigan State University student from China, has been left paralyzed from the chest down after sustaining injuries in the mass shooting on the campus earlier this month. When Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden heard that Hao was his big fan, he immediately stepped in, donating to the student’s GoFundMe page to help pay his medical bills.

Harden and Hao also FaceTimed.

“Everything will work itself out, be strong. You’re all right. You’ll be all right, I promise you are. … I’m with you. I know it’s tough right now, but you’ve got to stay physically strong, you know what I mean? You gotta just think positive things, and keep pushing and keep fighting. I got you,” Harden told Hao on the call, Bleacher Report reported.

The basketball player has also reportedly sent him game-worn sneakers and other gifts.

Who is John Hao?

John Hao was one of the five students who were critically injured after 43-year-old Anthony McRae opened fire inside the Michigan State University on February 13.

“The bullet severed John’s spinal cord (t7-t8) and critically injured his lungs, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down,” Hao’s roommate Argent Qian wrote in his GoFundMe page.

“As he remains stabilized in the ICU with a breathing tube inserted in his lung, his family is facing significant financial burdens,” Qian added.

“Due to Covid, they are already in a large amount of debt, and John’s critical injuries are adding to the pressure on the family, leaving their parents not only to pay the debt in the future but also need to take care of John without having any income, since they are in the US without speaking any English,” he said.

The GoFundMe page has already raised more than $353,829.
