Joseph Killins, a man from Tampa, Florida has been accused of kidnapping and raping a female DoorDash driver. He also allegedly shot at her family when they came to rescue her, according to the police.

The incident unfolded on April 18. Killins, 38 was arrested on Saturday after he held the driver at gunpoint who was in her 20s around 11 p.m. He then drove her to an apartment at the Belara Lakes Apartment complex, where he proceeded to rape her. The victim’s family rushed to the location after checking the GPRS of her phone to try to rescue her. It is not clear how her family came to know she was in trouble.

“The victim’s family, who had been tracking her phone, arrived and rescued her from the car. Killins responded by firing multiple times,” police said. A family member of the victim’s girlfriend, who arrived on the scene, was struck by a bullet reportedly fired by Killins. The accused fled the scene after having fired multiple rounds.

After firing multiple rounds, Killins fled the scene. According to the police, in the same apartment complex, Killins threw a woman in her early 40s to the ground and punched her in the face. He then stole her backpack. It is believed he escaped toward the Haven Waters Edge Apartment complex.

Although the two cases were not initially connected to Killins, the detectives decided to work together and that is how they could catch the accused. Authorities located him at the Tampa Inn Hotel and arrested him.

“We are appalled by this heinous and abhorrent crime. No one should ever have to endure something as horrific as this and we’re here to support the Dasher in any way we can,” said DoorDash spokesperson Julian Crowley. “We’re grateful to Tampa Police for their work to hold the perpetrator accountable and we strongly hope justice is served.”

He has been charged with armed kidnapping, robbery with a firearm, armed sexual battery, and aggravated battery with a weapon. There is also an additional charge of robbery in connection to the April 19 attack. He has been booked into the Orient Road Jail.
